Have you heard of the Brasilia Sport? This handcrafted sports car, with bold lines and a daring style for its time, is a historic landmark in the world of Brazilian automobiles. Produced in 1960 by Carroceria Sport Ltda., in Rio de Janeiro, it was created in homage to the new federal capital, Brasília, inaugurated that same year. With European inspiration and reliable mechanics from Volkswagen, the Brasília Esporte left a unique legacy, being considered one of the first out-of-series cars in Brazil.

A Car Ahead of Its Time

Brasília Esporte was developed based on the mechanics of the famous Volkswagen Beetle, which had begun to be manufactured in Brazil in 1959. It used the same four-cylinder boxer engine, with 1,192 cm³ and power of 30 hp. Despite being modest, the engine allowed the car to reach a top speed of 100km/h, which was sufficient by the standards of the time.

In addition, it used a four-speed manual transmission and had rear-wheel drive, elements inherited directly from the Beetle. Its body, handcrafted, had structural reinforcements to compensate for the torsion caused by the convertible design, something that made the model stand out among the national handcrafted sports cars.

European Inspired Design

The Brasília Esporte had lines clearly influenced by European sports cars from the 1950s. Its long front was reminiscent of models such as the Italian Maserati, while the side could be confused with that of the Karmann-Ghia, which would only begin to be produced in Brazil in 1962.

The understated yet elegant rear end featured taillights inspired by the 1955 Ford Thunderbird, while the headlights and turn signals were reused from the Beetle, reinforcing the functional and economical character of the project. To top it off, the model offered two hood options: one of canvas, which matched the interior finish perfectly, and another rigid one, made of aluminum, which was easy to remove.

Artisanal Production and Exclusivity

Each Brasília Esporte unit was handcrafted, a true work of automotive craftsmanship. The body was constructed from steel sheets, while the doors, hood and rear engine cover were molded from aluminum, using wooden forms in the small factory of Carroceria Sport Ltda.

Despite the attention to detail, the interior was extremely simple. The instrumentation was limited to a speedometer (graduated to 100km/h) and a fuel gauge. As a luxury feature, the car had a AM radio embedded in the metal panel. The wheels and hubcaps were the same as the Beetle, reinforcing the dependence on Volkswagen mechanics.

The Brasília Esporte was not a cheap car. You had two options to acquire one: either you had to supply the chassis and mechanical components of a damaged Beetle or you had to hand over your entire Beetle so that the body could be replaced. In today's terms, the cost of this process would be equivalent to about R$ 150,000, considering the craftsmanship and exclusivity of the model.

The Recognition of History

Although the Brasília Esporte was produced on a small scale, with no clear records of the number of units manufactured, it earned a special place in the history of Brazilian motorsports. 2013, a restored unit was awarded at the classic car event in Waters of Lindóia, reinforcing its value as a rarity.

The model displayed at this event was 1961 and highlighted all the elegance and simplicity of the project. It remains an extremely coveted collector's piece, with its value estimated at more than R$ 300,000, depending on the state of conservation and originality.

Comparisons with Other Brazilian Sports Cars

If Brasília Esporte had had a longer production, it would certainly be remembered alongside other national icons, such as Brasinca 4200 GT, O Willys Interlagos, O DKW Malzoni and Puma GT. Despite not having achieved the same level of fame, Brasília Esporte paved the way for the idea of handcrafted cars in Brazil, showing that it was possible to create exclusive models on national soil.
