Released on 1996, these commemorative versions were inspired by the Atlanta Olympics and have become true relics over the years. Today, in 2025, these models remain highly valued among collectors, being one of the most iconic Gol series.


The emergence

In 1994, Volkswagen do Brasil presented the second generation of the Gol, popularly known as “Ball goal”. The model brought several improvements over the first generation, including greater interior space, improved torsional rigidity and more comfort for the occupants. The success was immediate, and the Gol continued to lead sales in Brazil.

With the approach of Olympics, in 1996, Volkswagen decided to invest in a special series that would take advantage of the sporting moment. The result was the Gol Atlanta and Parati Atlanta, which received an exclusive look and different equipment. At the time, the automaker invested around US$ 5 million (about R$ 26.4 million in values adjusted for 2025) in the project.


Version differences

Both the Goal as for Parati were based on the version CLi, which was one of the most balanced in the line. The models received bumpers and mirrors painted in body color, in addition to exclusive stickers alluding to the Olympics.

The standard items were quite complete for the time, including:

  • Double parabola headlights inherited from the Gol GTi;
  • 14 inch wheels with Golf GL hubcaps;
  • Green glasses;
  • Rear wiper and defroster;
  • Roof antenna and sound preparation;
  • Three-spoke steering wheel of the Gol GTi;
  • Power steering and driver's seat height adjustment;

A Parati Atlanta still had a roof rack, expanding its versatility.

Engine and performance

The Atlanta versions had two engine options:

  • 1.6 AP-1600 engine, with 76 hp and 12.3 kgfm of torque;
  • 1.8 AP-1800 engine, with 90.6 hp and 14.3 kgfm of torque.

Both engines were coupled to a five-speed manual transmission, ensuring good performance and mechanical reliability.


A weight-throwing campaign

Volkswagen invested heavily in marketing to promote the Atlanta series. The launch campaign featured three phases, culminating in commercials starring the coach Zagallo and by the goalkeeper Dida, who represented Brazil at the Olympics.

Furthermore, the Olympic Magazine Gold Series 1996 held a special draw, in which 50 Gol Atlanta 1.6 were given as prizes, in addition to ten apartments accompanied by a Parati Atlanta 1.6. The draw took place during the program Faustão's Sunday, broadcast by TV Globo.


Gol and Parati in 2025: valued relics

Almost passed 30 years, Atlanta models have become highly coveted by enthusiasts and collectors. According to the Denatran, in 2023, still existed 14,827 units registered:

  • 6,741 units of the Gol Atlanta 1.6;
  • 4,135 units of the Gol Atlanta 1.8;
  • 1,585 units of the Parati Atlanta 1.6;
  • 2,366 units of the Parati Atlanta 1.8.

With the Goal out of line since 2022, the trend of special versions increasing in value has only increased. In 2025, a A well-preserved Gol Atlanta can cost between R$50,000 and R$80,000, while a Parati Atlanta in excellent condition can exceed R$ 100 thousand.
